Smart Locks vs. High-Security Deadbolts for Bay Area Homes

The question is rarely “smart or not smart.” It is which door should be smart, and where a mechanical lock is still the more dependable answer.

What a high-security deadbolt does well

A quality mechanical deadbolt has no battery, no firmware and no pairing. It resists picking and bumping with security pins, hardened bolts and a reinforced strike plate, and it works in a power cut, a network outage or a frozen night in the hills.

For a primary entry door, that reliability is hard to beat — especially on a home where the door is more likely to be attacked than remotely managed.

Where smart locks earn their place

Keypads and app locks solve real problems: no key under the mat for the cleaner, temporary codes for guests or contractors that expire on schedule, and a log of who opened the door and when. For a rental, an Airbnb or a home with frequent visitors, that is genuinely better than copied keys.

The trade-offs are batteries, connectivity and hardware quality. Cheap smart locks often use a mechanical core that is weaker than the deadbolt they replaced — the electronics are the feature, not the security.

The hybrid most Los Gatos homes choose

A common setup is a high-security mechanical deadbolt on the primary entry, and a quality keypad deadbolt on a secondary door — the one used by family, cleaners or guests. Each door gets the lock that fits how it is actually used.

If you want the convenience of codes on the front door, choose a keypad model with a reputable mechanical core and a physical key override, and keep the strike plate reinforced.

What we install most often

On South Bay homes we are asked for keypad entry on the door the family uses daily, high-security cylinders keyed alike across the remaining exterior doors, and a single master key for the household. That mix keeps one key working everywhere it should, while codes handle the doors that change hands.

Whatever you choose, the install matters as much as the hardware: correct backset, solid strike, aligned frame and tested dead-latch. A great lock badly fitted is a weak lock.

Tell us how each exterior door is used and we will recommend hardware per door instead of one product for the whole house.
